Learn to Swim 2010

Note from Debbie Concerning 2010 Schedule:

It is my sincere hope that I don’t neglect any clients with the changes I am making regarding swim lessons this summer.  Summer is always a crazy-busy time of year for me, and I am trying to do a better job this year of meeting both my family’s and the community’s needs.    That being said, I have decided to focus my efforts on non-swimmers.

As much as I love teaching the more advanced swimmers, teaching high school full time and offering stroke classes in the evenings really isn’t feasible.  I added that to the fact that my pool REALLY isn’t large enough to properly train swim team kids, and decided the most logical thing to do was nix all stroke classes.  I feel as if these kids are water-safe and can refine their strokes in other programs.  For what it’s worth, we tried Mayde Creek Aquatics this fall and really enjoyed it. I have also heard good things about LifeTime Fitness’ swim team classes.  I am truly sorry if the late notice regarding this change makes it hard for your children to be ready for swim team, I just feel as if I need to focus on my family and what is best for them.

As for the summer, my plan is to teach primarily (maybe only) Beg. I and Beg. II classes.  If your child is more advanced than that, feel free to sign them up…..however, I am focusing on non-swimmers and am not going to make any promises as to how much I can work with more advanced children.  I can work them into the class and give them their fair share of time, but can’t drastically change the course of the class if they are more advanced than the other children in it.

2010 Sign Up:

All questions regarding sign-up/registration/class recommendations/fees/schedules/etc. MUST be received by Saturday, March 6 if you want them answered prior to registration. Sign up for 2010 will run from Thursday, March 11 at 7 a.m. through Friday, March 12 at midnight. ALL sign-ups should be via email. Please list your top three choices, in order, and note any dates/times that absolutely won't work. Current clients will have priority over new students.  Be sure and note on your email if you are a return client.  I will begin assigning people to classes on Saturday, March 13.   At that time, you will be notified of which class(es) you are in, and if for some reason it doesn't work out with your schedule, you will need to notify me asap but will not be guaranteed another spot. Because of the severe cut in classes, all fees (see below) must be received by Thursday, April 1. On April 2 I will drop all unpaid students from the rosters, without notification, and will begin filling spots from the waiting list.

Carefully consider your family schedule, as your tuition reserves your class space even if you are not there. Remember that make-ups (for classes cancelled due to bad weather, etc.) are almost always held at the same time on the Friday following the cancelled class and if more than one make-up is needed, on the following Saturday morning.  Thus, if you want to make sure your child will be able to participate in any possible make-up classes, please keep the Friday, Saturday and even Sunday as free as possible following each week of  lessons.  Make-ups due to illness or other unforeseen events should be discussed with Debbie on an individual basis.  If you are considering multiple sessions, we suggest signing up for them now, since we expect to be full or almost full by the start of the summer.

Fees:
Please make all checks payable to Debbie Saurage.  Remember to put the child's(children's) name(s), session number(s) and time(s) on the check.  Please send your check to:

Summer Classes:

All 2010 sessions will be mini/semi-private sessions with one teacher (Debbie) and 5 students.  They will run Monday through Thursday for one week and Friday will be used for needed make-ups (due to weather, etc.).  We recommend you sign those students who have more to learn (as well as all two year old beginners) up for more than one week, preferably two consecutive weeks.

Class Requirements:

  • Mom (or Dad) and Tot is a class for children 6 months to 2 years and one parent which teaches the child and the parent how to have fun and be safe around water. This class will not teach your child how to swim. Hopefully, it will prepare the child for a Beginner I class.

  • Beg I is for non-swimmers, ages 2 years and up.

  • Beg II's must be able to swim at least six feet.

  • Mini/Semi-Private Beg. II classes are new this year.  They will be a smaller class size (four students) and only four classes (one week) in length.  Beg. II students must be able to swim at least 6 feet (as in a traditional Beg. II class).

  • Advanced Beginner students must be able to swim the length of a backyard pool (34 feet) front and back crawl and tread water for a minimum of 15 seconds.

  • Stroke students must be proficient at front and back crawl, treading water, survival float and diving. They should have enough endurance to be able to easily swim 2-4 lengths of the pool and need the recommendation of their teacher.   Stroke I students work on their front and back crawl, racing starts, flip turns and how to use backstroke flags.  Stroke II students work on all four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly), individual medley plus everything Stroke I covers.

  •  Endurance Classes are new this year.  An endurance student should be competent in all four competitive strokes.  He/she should have at least one year experience on a summer swim team with four legal or very close to legal strokes.  We will work on endurance, stamina, speed and reinforce their stroke work.

  • Adult and teen classes are for those who don't know how to swim as well as those who can swim but would like to improve their strokes. The purpose of this class is to give you the skills needed in order to practice independently, and to refine your strokes.
